Paper Chromatography

*Some specimens did not turn out well and results were very faint.

Pen 2 (Zig): (11.2/11.2 = 0)
Hints of blue, purple and yellow.

First digit '9': (9.6/10 = 0.96)

Hints of blue and yellow.

Second digit '0': (9.6/9.6 = 0.990 [to 3 s.f.]):

Hint of blue.

Third digit '0': (9.4/9.2 = 1.02 [to 3 s.f.])

Hint of blue.

Fourth digit '0':
Did not manage to see results.

Last digit '0': (8.8/8.6 = 1.02 [to 3 s.f.])

Flame Test

Original flame: (blue)

Flame with barium: (pale yellow green)
Did not manage to take a picture.

Flame with calcium: (orange-red)
Flame with copper: (blue-green)
Lead: (white blue)
Potassium: (liliac red)
Sodium: (intense yellow)
Mixture:
Thinking question:
What colour would human ash produce?
I think that human ash will produce a mixture of colours - mainly orange-red, and maybe small amounts of yellow and liliac. This is because, human ash should be largely made up of calcium, from the bones, and a little mineral salt like sodium and potassium.

20 July 2011 - Finger Printing

Powder Dusting Method
Attempt 1:

Some parts of the finger print was not revealed by the powder. The fingerprint was relatively clear, but might have been clearer if I had oiled my finger more.

Attempt 2:

The lines of the fingerprint was not shown by the powder. Instead, the powder formed dots instead. Perhaps I did not dust the powder well.

Due to time constraints, I was unable to make a 3rd attempt.

Iodine Fuming Method
Attempt 1 was unsuccessful and did not show the fingerprint at all. This might have been because the fingerprint was not facing the source of iodine fumes.

Attempt 2:

Initially, the fingerprint was shown quite clearly. However, I was unable to take a picture immediately and the fingerprint faded partially when I finally managed to do so. This might have been due to the fumes escaping through air holes.

Ridges and Pores Activity

The marks did not manage to show up in the picture very well. However, faint lines can still be observed.

Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) Fuming Method

This did not work out very well and only a few dots were shown.

Ink Stamp

This resulted in the clearest image of my fingerprints.

Clues
- Break-in followed by struggle.
- Victim flaunted his wealth and was involved in philandering.
- Two different women came in and out of victim's house at different times in the afternoon of murder.
- The blonde went into the house at around 1.00pm and came out in a good mood 1h later.
- The redhead went into the house at about 4.00pm and stormed out 15 mins later.
- A men was walking back and forth in front of the house at about 10.15pm.

Place of entry:
- Point of entry was the backdoor. (Lock was forced open by a prybar [Size of scratches on the lock matches the prybar; there were 2 markings on the lock])
- 3-D impression of a work boot in the mark. Men size 11. Heel is worn out; man drags his feet.

Place of struggle:
- 5 different types of hair strands: 2 long and blond, 3 relatively short (2 brown, 1 red).
- A love/hate letter, depending on which paragraph you read. Jealousy.
- Paper comes from shop ("We are the world" that sells paper hand-made by people from 3rd-world countries. Environmentally-friendy.
- 30 different sets of finger prints at the place of struggle.
- One was found on the vase used to hit the victim in the jaw.
Place of murder:

Case 1
An inconsiderate slob dumped trash on Rachel Rabbit's lawn. One of these two suspects (cow and raccoon) is guilty. Slylock Fox found evidence that may identify the loathsome litterbug.
What did Slylock observe to help him identify the trash tosser?

He observed the type of trash found on Rachel Rabbit's lawn. We can infer from the bones in the trash that the raccoon is the tosser as the cow does not eat meat. He can also test for fingerprints.

Skylock found bones in the trash.
The bull is an herbivore and only eats plants.
The raccoon is an omnivore and eats both plants and animals.
The raccoon is the trash tosser.

Awareness Test
I managed to count 13 passes made by the white team, which was correct. However, I did not see the moonwalking bear initially. I was too focused on counting the number of passes the white team made and blocked out the others that were wearing dark coloured clothes. I saw the bear only when I watched the video for the 2nd time, after I found out that there was actually a bear in the video.
